Northern Stage is the largest producing theatre company in the North East of England and is regarded as one of the top-ten UK producing theatres. We have built a reputation for visually driven productions that attract audiences of all ages.

When I’m travelling around the country either with a tour, or when I’m looking for work or looking for partnerships and indeed when I’m abroad, I find myself talking about the North East with great passion and great affection.

Northern Stage tours all over England and has done for many years, and I see that as a very, very important role. Taking theatre out of the region to audiences who don’t know our work and who don’t know our history makes a real difference to the perception of the North East, so we very much see ourselves as ambassadors in that sense.

The business community in the North East is generally very supportive, rather generous, rather collaborative, and I feel that as a cultural organisation we have very good lines of communication. It’s always possible to improve these however and I think that widening the network, bringing businesses closer together and sharing good practice can only be a good thing for the North East.

The story about the North East travels far and wide. The sense that there is ambition here, there’s daring. It’s a region that has been able to build a giant angel, for no reason apart from to have a giant angel, and there’s something extremely appealing about that.
