Colmans Fish Shop helps net new supporters

Monday, 15 December 2008

Anyone walking down Ocean Road in South Shields will be familiar with Colmans Fish and Chip shop but the business is helping to spread the message about North East England much further afield.

Proudly promoting the message ‘Passionate about Fish and Chips’ Colmans has recently been named National Champion UKTV Food Heroes 2008 receiving its prize from celebrity chef Gary Rhodes.

Regional Ambassadors Colmans of South Shields has been serving its famous fish and chips and seafood for over four generations and has built its reputation by not compromising on quality or service.

Owner Richard Ord says the competition was another way for them to spread the message about North East England: “It involved showcasing the best that the North East has to offer, the produce we have in this region is outstanding. The fish in the North East is amongst the best in the world. We have got fabulous smoked salmon from Craster, great restaurants and chefs, as a region it is vastly underrated.”

The Colmans team’s success has seen them giving advice to the British Embassy in Guatemala and has seen high profile figures call in for dinner, including Tony Blair, local MP and Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Patrick Stewart. The actor, who plays Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Science Fiction TV series Star Trek, described Colmans’ fish and chips as ‘Galactic’.

But they aren’t Colmans only fans, the business has also won praise from Greenpeace for their green initiatives including sourcing all their fish sustainably, using takeaway forks made from potato starch and installing new fryers that use 30% less energy.

Richard has been a huge supporter of the campaign since day one: “It was the wording ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ which just about sums us up in the North East whether it is football or cooking, and that’s why I think the campaign is becoming more popular as time goes on.”

Colmans next project is to launch their own-label batter flour which should roll out in the New Year. It will be available from the shop and other outlets. The first order has already come in from Gary Rhodes and Richard is hoping their latest venture will bring even more attention to North East England.
